Stormveil Castle: Your Complete Walkthrough

Stormveil Castle is the first major legacy dungeon in Elden Ring, and it's where many players hit their first serious wall. Between the patrolling knights, hidden traps, and one of the game's most memorable bosses, this area demands careful navigation. This guide covers every route, shortcut, and secret to help you conquer it efficiently.

Before You Enter: Preparation Checklist

  • Level recommendation: Aim for level 25–35 before attempting Stormveil seriously.
  • Flask upgrades: Collect at least 4 Golden Seeds and 2 Sacred Tears before entering.
  • Upgrade your weapon: A +3 or higher weapon makes a significant difference against the castle's enemies.
  • Spirit Ashes: Obtain the Lone Wolf Ashes from Melina or any merchant early — they're invaluable here.

The Two Entry Routes

When you first reach the castle gate, Gatekeeper Gostoc will offer you a side path through a hole in the wall. Here's the truth about both options:

Main Gate (Recommended)

Fighting through the main gate is harder initially but gives you access to more loot, more Grace Sites, and a better understanding of the castle's layout. The cannon-lined walkway is deadly — sprint between cover points and roll through cannon blasts rather than trying to time them perfectly.

Gostoc's Side Path

This sneaky route bypasses much of the early castle but causes you to miss several important items, including the Rusty Key and the Curved Sword Talisman. Take this route only if you're rushing to the boss on repeat attempts.

Key Areas & Items Not to Miss

  1. The Liftside Chamber: Activate this Site of Grace immediately — it's your best respawn point for the Godrick fight.
  2. Curved Sword Talisman: Hidden in a room guarded by two knights near the main hall. Boosts Guard Counters significantly.
  3. Stonesword Key Doors: Two fog doors require Stonesword Keys. One leads to the Rusty Key; the other to a Golem's Halberd.
  4. Nepheli Loux: Speak to this NPC in a side room before the boss. She can be summoned for the Godrick fight — a huge help.

Godrick the Grafted: Boss Strategy

Godrick is a two-phase fight. In Phase 1, he uses wide sweeping axe attacks with long wind-up animations — your window to strike is right after his combo ends. Stay close to his left side (your right) to dodge most of his swings.

Phase 2: The Dragon Arm

At roughly 50% health, Godrick grafts a dragon head onto his arm. This introduces fire breath attacks. Key tips:

  • When he raises the dragon arm for a breath attack, run behind him, not sideways.
  • He gains a new jumping fire slam — roll toward him, not away.
  • Use Nepheli Loux or Spirit Ashes to split his aggression.
  • Bleed and Frostbite build up effectively against him if your build supports it.

After the Victory

Defeating Godrick rewards you with the Godrick's Great Rune and the Remembrance of the Grafted. Activate the Great Rune at the Divine Tower of Limgrave to the east, then use it with a Rune Arc for a significant stat boost. The Remembrance can be traded to Enia at the Roundtable Hold for either Godrick's Axe or the Grafted Dragon fist weapon.

With Stormveil cleared, the path to Liurnia of the Lakes opens up — and a much larger world awaits.
